When I first pitched the idea of doing a decor book, it was 2013. It was called “Welcome to the Jungalow.” I had 3500 Instagram followers and 20,000 monthly blog readers and a burning desire to create an aesthetic manifesto in print. I got turned down by every publisher that reviewed my proposal (and there were many). They said my style was “too niche”. They said that houseplants were “dated.” They said the market was “too small.” So I felt depressed for about a week, then I went back and I made the idea bigger. Instead of “Welcome to the Jungalow” I rebranded the book idea and called it “The New Bohemians” I put the plant tips in the end of the book in a “plant-o-pedia” instead of sprinkling them throughout. And I went back to the publishers. I then got a few offers. I went with @abramsbooks and made the book with a small budget and a very dedicated amazing team (looking at you @Dabito + @j_rosencrantz). Shortly after the release of the book it became a New York Times Bestseller. Then in 2017 we released its companion title, The New Bohemians Handbook. We’ve now sold over 100,000 copies of the books, and they’ve been translated into three more languages. Without a doubt, The New Bohemians books we’re THE launchpad for my career and I don’t know where I’d be now had I not pushed through my initial disappointment with the rejections. If you have an idea and you hit road blocks, keep on listening, growing and reaching, but don’t lose sight of the heart of your vision. If you push and push and don’t take no for an answer, you CAN make it happen. Here’s to a niche style, “dated” houseplants and small ideas that with perseverance and hard work can grow into BIG things. 👊🏽✌🏾🙌🏾
